West Brom v Brighton & Hove Albion – History and Statistics

Saturday will be just the 26th meeting between the Baggies and the “other Albion” and the 22nd in the league. Albion have never lost a home league game to Brighton, with the Seagulls’ two victories at the Hawthorns coming in cup competitions, most recently on their last visit in the 2019 FA Cup.

The only previous Premier League meeting between the sides in West Bromwich came in 2018 when Alan Pardew “guided” Albion to his one and only league victory in his tenure at the club thanks to goals from Jonny Evans (pictured) and Craig Dawson.

The clubs first met at the Hawthorns in a League Cup tie in September 1976 which the visitors, then a Third Division club, won 2-0 beating Johnny Giles’ newly promoted side thanks to a brace from Peter Ward.

The Seagulls were managed by Alan Mullery and were at the start of a dramatic rise in the clubs fortunes which saw them promoted twice in three seasons to reach the First Division for the first time in 1979. They spent four years in the top flight reaching the FA Cup final in the same season they suffered relegation, 1982/83.

The Baggies remained unbeaten against Brighton throughout that period with their best result coming in September 1982 when goals from Nicky Cross, Ally Brown (2), Martin Jol and Peter Eastoe all finding the net in the second half resulting in a 5-0 victory.

Brighton are, of course, managed by former Baggie, Graham Potter, who made 46 appearances for the Throstles having been signed from Premier League, Southampton, in February 1997. He moved to York City in the summer of 2000.
